ALWAYS CHASING
by John Petrylak

At 38 years old with 2 busy kids involved in travel soccer, karate and ballet I gotta get creative sometimes to fit in my training. If it wasn't for my wife Amanda keeping things together  none of this could happen.

I grew up riding my bicycle everywhere it was my most prized possession! That turned into riding and eventually racing dirt bikes. I raced motocross off and on from the early 90's through 2009. During this time I always rode my mountain bike to cross train but I was never serious about racing it. Then I was invited to participate in a 24 hour race on a 4 man team in 2010. After the first lap I was hooked!

IN REVIEW
BOLD ROCK HARD CIDER
For 2016, Bold Rock stepped up to the plate and fully engaged mountain bike racing in Virginia as our Presenting Sponsor. Through the year, Bold Rock developed a Mountain Bike Team with members Laura Wolf and Amanda Brookman competing and placing 3rd place Beginner Women and 3nd place Sport Women, respectively. Bold Rock went on to host our Champions Ceremony and making a special contribution to some of Virginia's finest Trail Advocacy Groups. We have appreciated their contribution tremendously.

VORS PAYDIRT
The Virginia Off Road Series has a deep history with Trail Advocacy. We spent 4 years on the Board of RVA MORE. We also have made a stand to keep mountain biking in places where this healthy, outdoor lifestyle fits in with our community. We believe mountain bike athletes should take part when they can afford the time. In doing so, we will acknwoledge their participation through points and other benefits.

In 2016, mountain bike athletes around the state contributed over 530 hours towards various projects benefitting mountain biking in Virginia.

PARTICIPATION
2016 was an exciting year for the Virginia Off Road Series with over 2,000 mountain bike athletes participating in 24 event weekends offering 30+ racing opportunities. That's a ton of racing.

With all said and done, 2016 witnessed incredible turnouts in the Beginner & Sport Men categories. Where the womens categories had low-than-desired participation, it didn't take away from the competition. Expert Men & Women came down to the final race weekends to determine who the champions would be as it should be. On the Endurance/XCAT portion, the competition was there. It's just that there were not a ton of opportunities as endurance racing is going through a transformation period. For 2017, we look to increasing the number of race opportunities. So keep and eye out for more longer races. When we look at the ages of participation, we are seeing some of the new kids, literally, coming into mountain bike racing. Plus we are seeing mountain bike athletes stick with the sport into later years. Overall, the average age of the Virginia Mountain Bike Athlete remaining in the low to mid 30's but the ages are spreading further on both ends of the age range. If you ask us, this is pretty exciting news as this shows mountain bike racing is retaining and gaining participation.
